Community Outreach
The students of Mahadevi Birla Shishu Vihar have a Community Service Team which regularly participates in different outreach programmes throughout the year. Some significant projects undertaken are:
- Collection of Grains: - Students and Teachers donate rice and pulses for distribution of the same among individuals coming from financially disadvantaged background. In the session 2023-2024 the grains were segregated and packed in small packs and distributed among pavement dwellers in South Kolkata. In the session 2024-2025 khichdi was cooked and distributed among 100 young village girls to promote the idea of balanced and nutritious diet.
- Menstrual Health and Hygiene: - 100 young village girls were educated by our senior students on the importance of sanitary napkins, the science about the menstrual cycle, and the importance of exercising and physical fitness. Taekwondo students also demonstrated some simple self-defense techniques to instill a sense of confidence and empowerment in these girls
- Peer Mentoring:- Senior students attend a morning school run by an NGO and take classes in Science and Mathematics. The students of adjacent slums enrolled in corporation schools attend these classes and clear their doubts.
- Share and Care Drive: - During festival times like Durga Puja students donate new clothes to children from financially disadvantaged backgrounds. During Christmas students organize fests and sell products handcrafted by them. With the profit they earn they buy sensory toys required by the neuro-diverse children. They also donate old newspapers and old sarees to NGOs that train mentally ill patients undergoing skill training and becoming empowered.
- Caring for Our Elders: - The students are taken to Old Age Homes where they spend quality time with the elderly by organising simple interactive and cultural activities for them.
